Mathematics Fundamentals Fall into Place with Number Stax App from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Games-based learning app provides anytime, anywhere fundamentals and algebra practice for students and adults

Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today launched Number Stax, an arcade-like puzzle game app for students aged 12+. Number Stax is now available in the App StoreSM for $1.99. The standalone app was developed by HMH's The Learning Company division, which is known for the iconic Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? and The Oregon Trail brands.

"Houghton Mifflin Harcourt aims to increase student achievement by providing innovative solutions for the classroom, at home and on the go.  By presenting the material in a digital, game-based format, Number Stax makes math accessible, non-threatening, and fun — empowering students to comprehend critical skills," said Bethlam Forsa, EVP Global Product Development for HMH. "Number Stax offers 24/7 math practice that's not only engaging, but also strongly correlated with in-class lessons."

Number Stax
offers valuable math fundamentals practice through solving number problems and algebraic equations. Players increase their score by strategically arranging integer and operation tiles to solve for designated numbers or expressions. They can swap tiles, freeze the game against the ticking time clock, and take advantage of bonus operations to eliminate as many tiles as possible and achieve a high score. The speed of the game increases with extended use, and play ends when the tiles in the Number Stax grid reach the top of the screen.

While Number Stax targets key skills covered in most grade 5–9 math curricula, the pace and format of the game appeals equally to adults. "Anyone who enjoys puzzles or brain games will find Number Stax entertaining," said Forsa.

Number Stax boasts a variety of features including 20 levels of difficulty (10 in Number Mode and 10 in Algebra Mode), an instructional tutorial with helpful directions and game-playing tips, and interfacing with Apple Game Center to enable players to publish their achievements and profile information.

Number Stax is available for all Apple iOS devices including iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. To learn more about Number Stax and to purchase the app, click here .
